Fair Wear and Tear vs Cleaning
Separate ordinary deterioration from removable dirt when discussing the condition of a rented home.

Different types of observation
A worn carpet pile and a carpet with surface dirt raise different questions. Normal use can cause deterioration over time; cleaning concerns whether removable dirt and residue have been addressed. Neither category should be inferred from a vague photograph alone.
GUIDE
Give the comparison context
The tenancy length, starting condition and relevant records help explain changes. Identify each observation, its location and any maintenance history. Consult current deposit scheme guidance when assessing an actual claim rather than using a cleaning checklist as a liability decision.

GUIDE
Document what you can demonstrate
Keep check-in and checkout records with dated photos. Explain whether a mark pre-existed, whether the surface is worn or whether cleaning is still required. Cleaning cannot restore a finish that has deteriorated with age.
